You see all the too-good-to-be-true claims like, "Lose 10 pounds in 3 days," "Lose 20 pounds in 2 weeks." If these claims sound too good to be true, that's because they are! The only way to lose 10 pounds in 3 days is to go on a liquid diet or starve. Either method will make you weak, lose muscle and lose mostly water weight. Worse, you'll gain any weight you've lost as soon as you start eating normal foods. Here's a better way to lose weight quickly and healthfully.

Eat Complex Carbs and Protein

If you want to lose weight quickly and healthfully, decrease your intake of carbs and sugar. Increase your intake of protein and complex carbohydrates like leafy greens and cooked vegetables. Pick vegetables with a low carb count, like mixed greens. For your cooked vegetables, pick vegetables like green beans, eggplant, spaghetti squash, artichoke hearts, onions, bean sprouts, tomato. The list could go on. Whatever you do, stay away from potatoes of any kind, peas, corn, winter squash and white flour.

The kind of protein to eat is any fish, poultry, including Cornish game hen, duck, goose, bacon (on occasion) turkey, lamb, and veal.

Weigh & Measure Your Food

It's easy to overeat when you eyeball portions. Most people don't know what a 4 oz piece of protein looks like. To get an idea of portion sizes, buy a food scale. It doesn't have to be a fancy one. But I find digital scales to be more accurate. Get in the habit of weighing your protein portions out to get a feel of what 4 oz or 6 oz looks like. If you can't afford a scale, just know that a 4 oz piece of protein is the size of a deck of cards.

You'll want to invest in measuring cups and spoons. A cup is the size of a tennis ball. If you're a woman, you'll want to have 4 oz of protein per meal to lose weight. So a typical day's menu would look like this:

Breakfast

4 oz Protein
1 Fruit

Lunch

4 oz Protein
1 Cup Cooked Vegetables
1 Cup of Salad
1 Tablespoon Fat

Dinner

4 oz Protein
1 Cup Cooked Vegetables

2 Cups Salad
3 Tablespoon Fat

Stay Away From Sugar

Contrary to popular belief, fat doesn't make you fat. Sugar makes you fat. Of course, your calorie intake counts, but only if you are eating high fat foods in combination with sugar and white flour. Stay away from all forms of sugar, even the natural kind.

If you cut your carbs significantly, say, 20 grams per day and eat protein and veggies, you'll lose weight fast. In fact, people who have eaten this way have lost 14 pounds in 2 weeks. Some of the weight loss will be water, as with all diets when you start. But after the first week of eating this way, you'll burn fat exclusively. But you definitely won't lose 10 pounds in 3 days.
